Daihatsu 6DK-20 Crankshaft Repair at Suez Canal (EGYPT)

Daihatsu 6DK-20 Auxiliary engine crankshaft was reported to be damaged due to the seizure of the bearing. The vessel was not permitted to cross the Suez Canal by the authorities due to Non-operation of the auxiliary engine.

RA Power Solutions technicians were deputed from New Delhi and they boarded the vessel at Suez Canal. Following are main details of Daihatsu 6DK-20 auxiliary engine and crankshaft.

  • The crankpin number #6 of the crankshaft was found to be damaged during the visual inspection and the remaining crankpins were observed to be ok.
  • The hardness of the crankpin was checked and observed on the higher side on some spots.
  • The crack detection test was undertaken after removing the bearing material from the crankpin, and multiple number of hairline cracks were observed.
  • The crankpin number #6 was subject to dimensional inspection. Against standard diameter of 170.00 MM. The Minimum diameter observed was 169.26 MM, thus the ovality of 0.74 MM.

Action Taken By RA Power Solutions for Repair of Damaged Crankpin

  • The grinding of crank pin number #6 was initially undertaken to the size of 169.00 MM (1.00 MM Undersize from the Standard Diameter).
  • Since the ovality and damage line marks of the crankpin were still present, it was jointly decided with the Chief Engineer to undersize the crankpin by 2.00 MM. The final size of the crankpin was maintained as 168.00 MM.

Supply of Crankpin Undersize Bearing by RA Power Solutions Pvt Ltd

RA Power Solutions technicians carried with them undersize bearings of 1.5 MM/2.0 MM/2.5 MM. The 2.00 MM bearing was retained by the ship staff and the engine was commissioned. The Auxiliary engine as on date is performing satisfactory.

In this case since the time available was short, the supply of undersize bearing of 2.00 MM which was hand-carried by RA Power technicians was of great help to the client. The engine was commissioned within four hours of grinding of crankpin.
